Summer survival

I think the province of Ontario might have forgotten that it turned the thermostat all the way up – seriously, it’s thirty degrees centigrade out there! And it’s not much better here at Needles in the Hay – I’m drinking down some ice cold lemonade like nobody’s business!

I’m not really a summer person, per se, but if there are two things that save summer for me, they are knitting and bluegrass. Don’t laugh! Bear with me.

Knitting. It is so hot outside that they are telling people to not go outside unless you have to – it’s that hot. Which means even though it’s summer, you’re actually going to spend some time indoors or at least sitting in the shade. No one likes heat exhaustion. It’s the perfect time to work on small projects in light summery yarns. Socks are the obvious choice, hence Sock Month in June! I’m also working on a little tank top in the Lanaknits Hemp for Knitting, a 100% hemp yarn, super durable, super washable, and super good for summer.

We have the Hemp for Knitting DK weight in stock in nine colours, plus a whole bunch of patterns – leaflet patterns at that…

We also have the Cotton/Silk blend by Misti Alpaca, the Eco-Baby organic cotton, and the Terra bamboo/cotton – all perfect choices for summer projects. When it’s too hot for daytime gardening, I knit, I drink lemonade, and I listen to bluegrass…

Bluegrass. What is it about bluegrass? Now, I did not grow up listening to country music of any kind. I am not predisposed to liking any kind of country music. As much as I wish I could say I grew up a country girl, I did not. I’m a townie through and through. But now, in my wiser years, I really loves me some bluegrass. Along with oldtime, blues, alt-country, and a wee bit of classic rock, bluegrass just speaks summer to me. It’s foot-tapping music to be sure. So here’s a little slice of bluegrass, courtesy of the Late Show with David Letterman from a few years ago…. “Men With Banjos Who Know How to Use Them”…

I love that Steve Martin plays the banjo… it’s so unexpected! Stay cool everyone!
