Yes, this is a gratuitous produce shot. I found a case of mangos for $5.99. That’s fifty cents a mango! Normally I don’t choose foreign produce, especially at a time of year when local produce is abundant. But I was at the grocer, and when faced with cherries from Chile (they grow domestically!), watermelons from Mexico (they grow domestically!), and strawberries from the U.S. (again, domestically! and around here even!), I figured if I was going to buy foreign produce, I might as well go all out and buy something that *doesn’t* grow here. (here endeth the rant)

And they’re VERY good. Any favourite mango recipes?

This is the beginning of my next pair of socks – Mermaid by Janel Laidman, from her book The Enchanted Sole. I’m knitting them with the Malabrigo Sock that I love so much, in a deep-sea-looking greeny-gray, with gold beads thrown in for a bit of kick. While progress has been slow going (ever since the heatwave liquified my brain), they’ve been really fun to knit so far. More on the sock project later…

Not a gratuitous cat shot, really! Moodie’s a little under the weather and the only appointment I could get for her before the weekend is this afternoon at 4. So I’m closing early (at 3:30). I apologize for the short notice, and if it could wait until Monday you know I would.

    A simple green salad with balsamic vinegar and diced mangos – yum! It is even better with a little fresh dill. The taste combination sounds weird, but it was the delightful result of an “eat everything left in the fridge dinner”. And smoothies!

      Good call on the salad idea, though I wasn’t brave enough for the dill – I used cilantro instead! 🙂

    If you want the recipe for the Mango Gazpacho with Pickled Shrimp I made on the long weekend, check it out at Epicurious.

    It seems a bit long, but BOY is it worth it!!!!


    Another good one is just to toss them in lime juice, chopped hot chile peppers, and cilantro.
