Off the Needles – Sunday January 27

This week, instead of showing what’s on my needles (because it’s still the Buckwheat pullover from last week!), I thought I’d show what’s recently OFF my needles!

This is the Campus Jacket by Amy Christoffers. I’ve had my eye on this pattern for a while – I immediately noticed the deep ribbing on the sleeve cuffs, and the visual interest created by the horizontal line of stitching at the hem, cuffs, and around the chest…

And fabric-covered buttons from a deer-in-birches print by Sarah Watts (from her Timber and Leaf collection!), with made-from-scratch leather button loops…

This pattern was originally designed for Berroco’s Campus yarn, which I used to carry in the store, but was discontinued last year. Instead, I used yarn from my stash: Debbie Bliss’ Luxury Tweed Chunky in “Mustard”.

This project exemplifies two of my 2013 Knitting Resolutions:

1. Knit more sweaters. I love and am amazed by knitters who do year-number-quantity challenges, like 12 of X in 2012. While I don’t actually think I could knit 13 sweaters in 2013, I’m curious to see how many sweaters I *can* finish in one year. This will be the year of as many sweaters as possible, but I still want to knit other things in between.

2. Knit more from my stash. I tend to feel pressure to only knit with yarns that are currently available in the store, and I think I’m partly justified in that – certainly the projects I keep in the shop as samples, as well as the projects I actively work on while in the shop, should be projects made with yarn that I carry. But after being in business for three years, I’ve definitely collected a few sweaters’ worth of yarn from lines that are now discontinued, and I think I’ve reached a point where it’s understandable that I might be wearing a sweater in yarn that I can no longer carry or sell (I can always suggest a substitute, of course!).

Considering all of this, I’ve certainly had sweaters on the brain recently, and I don’t think I’m alone!

Glenna was here yesterday, and taught two booked-full classes in Colourwork and Steeking (two very sweater-friendly techniques). She’ll be back in two weeks to teach Duct-tape Dressforms (2 spaces left!) and Knit Your Best Sweater (booked-full already!), and then back again in March to teach Intro to Lace and Sweater Finishing Techniques. For more info, you can check the Classes page on our website!

And another little piece of important information…

Our annual celebration and sale is next Saturday! Groundhog day! Tons of your favourite yarns will be on sale, we’ll have some snacks, and a few other exciting things! We’ll be open our regular hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and we’ll be closed the next day (Sunday February 3rd) to recover… and to watch football! (GO RAVENS!)

Yeah! another knitter who likes football! I thought we were only two, but seems we have a third 🙂 (my best friend and I knit while watching football together whenever we can, or on our own if we can’t get together)

Anniversary sale sounds like fun! I shall try my best to get down 🙂
