Deanna's Review of 90 Varas: Transhumant Wool

Deanna's Review of 90 Varas: Transhumant Wool

After recently finishing my Old Compass Cowl by Trin-Annelie, I've come to the conclusion that I am in love with this yarn.

90 Varas is the best of two worlds: light, airy, and soft with a hint of fuzz that you'd expect from a woolen spun; but with the crisp graphic stitch definition of a worsted spun.

I haven't tried it in textured stitches yet but I imagine it will be just as beautiful. "Brooklyn Tweed widows" who are grieving Loft will really appreciate 90 Varas. It doesn't have the same "nubbly quality" but it is lofty, springy, hazy, soft, and super satisfying to knit.

90 Varas pays tribute to the rich tradition of transhumance and the Merino sheep, a living symbol of Spain’s pastoral heritage.

Transhumance, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, connects seasons, landscapes, and history through the cañadas reales—ancient routes that still preserve the essence of this sustainable herding system. The name of this collection, 90 Varas, refers to the traditional measure of the width of these routes, equivalent to 75 meters. These paths, stretching over 125,000 kilometers, cover 1% of Spain’s territory and stand as a living testament to the balance between nature and human activity.

The collection's stunning palette is a mix of earthy neutrals and stunning heathered jewel tones. I had a lot of fun putting together my Palette for Old Compass, and Belén Fernández has just released her Atayu pullover and hat, which are the perfect canvas for 90 Varas
