Rustic Beauty meets Luxury with The Fibre Co.

Rustic Beauty meets Luxury with The Fibre Co.

We are delighted to be one of eight local yarn stores in Ontario to carry The Fibre Co’s line of luxurious and charmingly rustic yarns.

The Fibre Co.’s story began in 2003 in an old warehouse on the working waterfront of Portland, Maine with a small spinning mill, lots of raw natural fibre and founder Daphne Marinopoulos’ vision of creating yarns that she couldn’t find on retail shelves. From these humble beginnings to today’s respected brand now based in the United Kingdom, the Fibre Co. works with a variety of producers and artisans to continue creating yarns that delight and inspire.

The Fibre Co’s yarns are combinations of a variety of natural fibres and they’re always conscious of the environmental footprint from producer to mill to warehouse and everything in between. The collection is inspired by landscapes and special places from New England to the English Lake District, from the wilds of Scotland to ancient silk trading routes and the African Savanna.

To begin, we will be carrying two yarns, Luma and Meadow, both suitable for year round projects. In the Fall we will introduce some of the heavier weight options.

Luma is a DK weight yarn inspired by the mood and light found in mid-latitude savannas—those grassland ecosystems with open canopies allowing plenty of sunlight. Plant-based fibres mixed with silk and wool provide a built-in layer of warmth in winter yet lightness when required in warmer temperatures.

You may have noticed the Stonepoint poncho featured in many of the spring and summer magazines including Knit.Wear., Knitscene and Vogue Knitting. Ponchos are a hot item right now and we’ve worked up Stonepoint in the Breton colourway. It was a relaxing knit with a lace motif that is easy to memorize and rewarding.  The finished product has a lovely drape and a subtle sheen provided by the silk content in the fibre blend. You can visit the entire Luma Collection from Kelbourne Woolens by clicking here.

Usually filled with grasses and other non-woody plants, the theme of lightness is everywhere in a meadow. What better name for a lace weight yarn? Meadow is spun with The Fibre Co.’s trademark blend of luxury fibres and a touch of rustic. Combining four of the most luxurious fibres—baby llama, fine merino wool, silk and linen—this 2 ply yarn is slightly heavier than a typical lace weight. It is a versatile yarn that works well on a variety of needle sizes and a wide array of projects. With a generous 545 yards per skein Meadow is a great value. The beautifully subtle colour washes used in their dying process are also hard to resist!

Here is some pattern inspiration for Meadow, just click on the photos for more information on Ravelry. We hope you fall in love with The Fibre Co. like we did!
