The most remote inhabited island in the UK boasts stunning natural beauty, wildlife and human kindness. The perfect muse for an ancient and celebrated knitting style which captured the imagination of the world.
In this two part class you will learn everything you need to know to start your fair isle knitting on the right foot. Using Gundrun Johnston’s “Shetland Solstice” hat pattern, we’ll knit through the project together, mastering techniques along the way.
Pre-requisites: This class is designed for the intermediate knitter. Participants must be comfortable with knit and purl stitches, Long-tail cast-on, knitting in the round, and decreasing.
Homework: Cast on your Shetland Solstice Hat and finish the ribbing, ready to begin the colourwork section. Please bring your hat with completed ribbing to the first class.

Needles:
3.5mm / US 4 circular needle, 40cm / 16” length (for body of hat)
3.5mm / US 4 DPNs or long circular needle (if working magic loop for crown of hat)
3.0mm / US 2 circular needle, 40cm / 16” length (for brim)

95 yards MC
25 yards CC1
40 yards CC2
30 yards CC3
25 yards CC4
Allow approx. 40 extra yards if making a pom pom.
