Fair Isle Colourwork Essentials

The most remote inhabited island in the UK boasts stunning natural beauty, wildlife and human kindness. The perfect muse for an ancient and celebrated knitting style which captured the imagination of the world. 

In this two part class you will learn everything you need to know to start your fair isle knitting on the right foot. Using Ella Gordon's “Roosty” hat pattern, we’ll knit through the project together, mastering techniques along the way.

Pre-requisites: This class is designed for the intermediate knitter. Participants must be comfortable with knit and purl stitches, Long-tail cast-on, knitting in the round, and decreasing.

Homework: Cast on your Roosty Hat and finish the ribbing and increase row, ready to begin the colourwork section at Chart A Please bring your hat with completed ribbing to the first class on the needles.

Needles:
2.5mm 16” circular needle for working rib
3.5mm 16” circular needle for working hat body
3.5mm double pointed needles for working hat crown

Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking. Review Roosty pattern for more gauge details

Woolen spun, 100% wool fingering weight yarn in the following amounts. Shown in 2ply jumper weight.

Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper Weight (115m/125yards per 25g ball)
Yarn A: FC41
Yarn B: 1280
Yarn C: 1281
Yarn D: FC38
Yarn E: FC39
1 ball (125 yards) per colour

Notions:
1 stitch marker, darning needle for weaving in ends
